Blackbird is a game that pits four players into two teams, with partners seated across from each other. The gameplay unfolds in a clockwise manner, utilizing a deck of 41 cards featuring four suits: Black, Green, Red, and Yellow. Each suit contains 10 cards numbered from 5 to 14, with the standout Blackbird card holding a value of 20 points. The 14 and 10 cards are each worth 10 points, while the 5 cards are valued at 5 points. Remaining cards do not contribute towards scoring. In a suit, the 14 card holds the highest rank, followed by descending values down to the 5 card.

Players are dealt 9 cards each, reserving 5 cards collectively as the Nest. Bidding takes place for expected point gains during a round; bids start at 70 and cap out at 120 points in a Blackbird match. The highest bidder gains the right to select the trump suit and has the option to swap cards with the Nest.

The gameplay commences with the winning bidder leading the first trick. Following a lead card, players must respond in the same suit or play the Blackbird card if unable to follow suit. When trump is in play, possessing the Blackbird card mandates its use if no trump cards are available. The player with the highest card wins each trick and begins the subsequent one. The final trick winner collects the Nest if it houses any point cards.

If a bidding team fails to meet their declared points, they suffer a penalty equivalent to their bid amount. The game progresses until one team reaches the milestone of 300 points.
